Virtual Trauma Therapy in Alberta

What is trauma? It is defined as an event or circumstance that results in physical, emotional, or life-threatening harm. Heather at Prairie Dawn Counselling understands this and has extensive experience helping individuals struggling with trauma.

There are 2 types of trauma.

Acute Trauma

The first is referred to as acute and stems from events such as:

  • Occupational stress injury
  • Serious illness or injury
  • Being a survivor of or witnessing acts of violence
  • Being a survivor of crime
  • Childbirth
  • Bereavement
  • Being involved in a serious accident

Second Type of Trauma

The second type of trauma is referred to as complex and often occurs during your formative years.It can be a single event or repetitive. Common examples of this include:

  • Neglect / abandonment
  • Being a survivor of familial or domestic violence
  • Witnessing familial or domestic violence
  • Bullying
  • Being a survivor of emotional, physical or sexual abuse

Symptoms of Trauma

The symptoms of trauma are extremely varied but can include:

  • Anxiety
  • Irritability
  • Insomnia
  • Avoidance
  • Intrusive thoughts
  • Flashbacks
  • Hypervigilance
  • Shame
  • Physical illness

No matter what your situation and the challenges that you face, Heather will work with you to create a specific treatment plan. She will utilize the most appropriate modalities such as EMDR, CBT, DBT, somatic therapy and solution focused therapy to ensure that you are able to create the life you want. The sessions are either 60 minutes in length or 75 minutes if EMDR is included and can be scheduled to fit your needs.
